OSA Refund Policies and Safety & Security Considerations

If MSU decides to cancel a program for safety and security reasons

If MSU cancels a study abroad program for security reasons prior to its commencing, we will provide a full refund of all fees paid to MSU for the program (tuition and program fees).

If MSU cancels a program for security reasons after it has started:

  • additional expenses related to bringing the participants home (or to another approved program location) will be borne by OSA (for example, airline ticket change fees associated with early departures home, or to a new program location will be covered by OSA).
  • Refunds of program fees paid to MSU will be prorated and may be limited by non-recoverable contractual obligations.
  • Refund of tuition fees paid to MSU will depend on how much academic credit the student in the program will still be able to receive for work already completed or to be completed through alternative arrangements. OSA will attempt as far as possible to arrange with faculty and departments suitable alternatives to completing planned academic work for credit.

If a student chooses to withdraw from a program that has not been canceled

If MSU does not cancel a program but a student chooses to withdraw from a program due to safety and security concerns or any other reason, the standard withdrawal fee policy will apply. The withdrawal and transfer fee policy is detailed below.

Withdrawal and Transfer Fee Policy

If you withdraw or transfer from the program after accepting admission and your written notice of withdrawal or transfer is received at the Office of Study Abroad:

  • More than 8 weeks before the program's first day, you will be financially responsible for the $100 application fee and $200 deposit.
  • Less than 8 weeks before the program's first day, you will be financially responsible for the $100 application fee and $200 deposit plus any non-recoverable costs associated with the program at the time of my withdrawal.
  • After the program's first day, you will be financially responsible for the entire program fee.

In summary:

At the time of application: $100 fee will be billed

Before acceptance or w/in two-week grace period following acceptance: $100 application fee refundable/transferable

After acceptance and two-week grace period: $100 application fee is non-refundable, but can be transferred and $200 deposit is non-refundable; financial responsibility will be according to the above description.

Should you withdraw or transfer from the program after the program's first day, you will be financially responsible for the entire program fee and receive tuition refunds as follows:

  • Tuition and Fees - Fifteen-Week Semester
Refunds for recoverable tuition and fees are based on the campus calendar. For changes made through the first quarter of the term of instruction of on-campus classes (measured in weekdays, not class sessions), 100% of recoverable tuition and fees will be refunded. After that date, there will be no refund.

  • Tuition and Fees - Abbreviated Session
Refunds for courses that operate on less than a fifteen-week format will be based proportionately on the above policy using the abbreviated calendar of that program.

  • Air Transportation
Refunds are subject to the rules and regulations of the appropriate airline or agency.
