Freshman Seminars Abroad (FSA)
Information for Parents

Benefits of study abroad

Based on 50 years of research, study abroad influences students in three major areas:

  • personal development (e.g., confidence, handle change, self-esteem, etc.),
  • professional development (e.g., career decision-making, language ability, teamwork, etc.), and
  • cultural awareness (e.g., ability to work with divGap of Dunloe in Killarney National Parkerse people in diverse setting, knowledge of international issues, etc.).

From our experience with the Freshman Seminars Abroad, we know that students also report an easier transition into “college” life, both socially and academically. For these reasons, MSU believes that the FSA program offer students an excellent learning and adjustment opportunity.

Some of the themes reported from our students include:

  • Feeling more prepared to do college-level reading, writing, and testing;
  • Having a group of friends before they come on campus and the confidence that they have ability to make more;
  • Knowing how to navigate unfamiliar surroundings and use public transportation;
  • Being able to manage their money and live on a budget; and
  • Understanding the need to balance social and academic time.

Developing a learning community

FSA programs are held to a 15:1 student/faculty ratio, and this small-group environment helps students form connections with each other and an MSU professional. A key facet of student success at college is forming a community of social and academic support, and based on past experiences, these goes definitely occur with the FSA model.

Starting in 2007, students have the additional opportunity to continue learning with other FSA participants by enrolling in a series of linked courses during their first year (see Academic and program information).

On-site support

In addition to the teaching faculty, each program will have additional on-site staff whose role is to support the faculty and attend to non-classroom issues such as logistical support, student needs, and safety. On-site support staff members have experience and training related to working with first-year students in a co-curricular, student advising capacity.

While on-site and in-transit, the faculty and staff team will ensure that the group stays together and travels safely. During orientation, students and parents will receive all information relevant to contacting students and faculty, as well as MSU campus staff, during the program.

Safety and security concerns

Program locations are selected on the basis of their academic, cultural, and geographic appeal, the availability of affordable housing and amenities, and availability of reliable logistical support on site. MSU also considers the criteria of safety, security, and health.

MSU constantly monitors the safety of its programs and the conditions that exist within our host nations. For more information on safety and study abroad, please refer to our Health, Safety and Security Concerns in Study Abroad web site.
