(1) Investigate Programs Use the study abroad resource room, Web site, and advisers to find a program that fits your goals. Be sure to visit the Office of Study Abroad in room 108 of the International Center. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and is available 24/7 on the Web at http://studyabroad.msu.edu. Be sure to attend the Study Abroad Fair! This is a “one-stop” shopping experience where you can find out about all that study abroad has to offer and talk with professors and past participants right there on the spot. Check the study abroad Web site for date and location. (2) Talk to Your Academic Adviser Think about what you want to get out of a study abroad experience. Meet with an adviser to discuss programs and curricula that might be right for you. Consider programs that offer courses in your major or other opportunities to meet requirements, including opportunities to fulfill some of your Integrative Studies requirements, such as IAH or ISS credits. (3) Plan Ahead Determine the cost of your program and investigate a variety of financing options. Early planning for study abroad helps you make cost-effective program decisions and helps you prepare your finances through savings, scholarships, and financial aid. Financial aid applies to study abroad and in some cases your eligibility will increase to cover additional expenses. Scholarship opportunities are available through the Office of Study Abroad and through the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. (4) Apply Early Allow yourself plenty of time to complete a program application (now online!), finish your academic planning, and prepare to go abroad by attending orientation programs and researching the country and culture of your educational program. |
